This story is just too bizarre to not comment on. Apparently, kidnapping young girls and forcing them to marry against their will is part of the marriage custom in Ethiopia (what a quaint little custom . . .). The UN estimates that more than 70 percent of marriages in Ethiopia are by abduction. Well, one of these abductions went awry in a strange twist on the "Daniel in the Lions' Den" story.
A 12-year-old girl who was abducted and repeatedly beaten by men trying to force her into a marriage was found on June 9 being guarded by three lions who apparently had chased off her captors. The lions had stood guard over the little girl until the police and relatives arrived, at which point, "they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest."
Apparently, the rescue by the lions is being viewed as a miracle because normally the lions attack people. A wildlife expert thinks the girl may have survived because she was crying after a beating:
"A young girl whimpering could be mistaken for the mewing sound from a lion cub, which in turn could explain why they didn't eat her," [Stuart Williams, a wildlife expert with the rural development ministry] said.
The police representative went on to say:
"If the lions had not come to her rescue, then it could have been much worse. Often these young girls are raped and severely beaten to force them to accept the marriage."
The police have caught four of the girls abductors and three more are still at large.
I'm going to make a conscious effort to never again refer to a human predator/criminal as an "animal." It's just too damn insulting to animals.
